Soke Hisashi Nakamura
1932 born at the 18th March, Prefecture Nagano, Japan. As a child he trained Judo and Kendo.
1949 move to KYUSHU
1950 He enters the TAKEDA school under the 43rd Soke OBA ICHIO, where he learned the entire Bujutsu of the TAKEDA school
1953 he became Uchideshi (internal student)
1956 sent to "SEIBUDEN" in Tokyo, headquarters of the TAKEDA school, to deputize for master OBA
1959 Soke OBA ICHIO died
1960 NAKAMURA established the BUDOKAI, his own independent association
1970 founded the "NIHON SOBUDO REBGOKAI" (Japan Complete Martial Arts Association)
1978 he registered his school as "TAKEDA RYU NAKAMURA HA"
SOKE HISASHI NAKAMURA, current head of TAKEDA RYU NAKAMURA HA, had leading influence to TAKEDA RYU. Born 1932 in SHINSHU, he moved to his aunt to north KYuHSHU at 1949. He had heard that there was a TAKEDA RYU dojo at YAGURA mountain under the supervision of Soke OBA ICHIO. The young NAKAMURA had to wait for one year sitting on the tatami silently, just watching and listening. It needed two warrantors and the spending of half-year income that young NAKAMURA was accepted in Soke OBA ICHOs dojo.
At that time it was tradition that martial arts only had been taught to a small group of apprentices, because they lived under the same roof as the master. Apart the regular training they had to fulfil daily work like cleaning and cooking. It took three more years
(1953) when NAKAMURA became UCHI-DESHI ("internal student").
Later Master OBA left his dojo for Tokyo, where he founded the SEIBUDEN DOJO as the new headquater of the TAKEDA-school and the NIPPON BUDO RENREN, the society for renovation of Budo.
Young NAKAMURA had to stay at Yagura Mountain to lead the dojo there. He told me that it was a very hard time for him not being together with his master.
1956 his wish was answered and Master OBA orderd him to be his representative in Tokyo, because Master Moritomo had to quit his job due to family reasons. Because of his quality in Budo the young Nakamura was the logical successor.
1959 OBA died all for a sudden without nominating his replacement, which was very seldom. Usually the lead of the school only was inherited to family members, but Soke OBA had no children.
After Soke NAKAMURAs telling his worst time in life followed. Full of dolour he decided to go to a ZEN monastery. The SEIBUDEN DOJO had to be closed.
After Master Moritomo and Master Sato elected the young Nakamura as the next Soke of Takeda Ryu an Inauguration was planned. At this event the “Densho” should have passed over to Nakamura. In traditional Bujutsu the Densho is a handwritten scroll, which shall include all the secrets of the school, the whole lineage of Sokes and some poems written of some headmasters.
Therefore to own the Densho was the sign to the public to be Soke.
It was the family of Sato, who owned the Densho. At the very specific evening, some Sokes from other Ryus also had been present, the lady of the house made a fatal plan.
Japanese people are also very clever business people and so the lady wanted to sell the scroll the Nakamura.
The young Nakamura was very upset, because the transmission of the scroll was a logical consequence and nothing which he needed to pay for.
So it was, and today still is, the manner of Soke Nakamura to bust the party, went out of the house and from that moment on never spoke again to this family.
This happening made some Europeans and even Japanese think that Soke Nakamura is not a legal headmaster of Takeda Ryu, because the Insignia of a Soke, the Densho, is missing. I even know some Europeans personally, who wanted to go to Japan buy that scroll to be the legitimate successor of Soke Oba Ichio.
Sometimes it is really strange what narcissism makes out of people.
Of course Soke Nakamura is a regular Soke of Takeda Ryu, because he did not learn something different and his direct master was Soke Oba Ichio. At Obas lifetime the young Nakamura emerged as one of the biggest talents ever in Takeda Ryu. Probably the same like Toyoshima Sensei today, who was the youngest Chuden Kyohan and Okuden Shihan in the whole history. No wonder, when you see him “live”.
Because of not having the original Densho Soke Nakamura had to register his school under the name Takeda Ryu Nakamura Ha. Otherwise he had no enctrance to Budo Organisation and legal departments, which he needed for spreading the school. But his reaction on this event already made him famous inside the inner circle of Budokas in Japan. So, this embarrassing event then, finally helped him to be known as a traditional Soke, with honour and the ability to go his way no matter which difficulties came across.
Because of already having commited himself to Budo completely he went freelance at 1960 and started to build his own organisation. He understood that from that moment on the survival of the school depended on spreading the teachings to public. More then a few students had to be taught.
the BUDOKAI was founded. Soke told me that sometimes he was so poor that he had nothing to eat.It took ten years with maximum personal effort that a few dojos and societies could be established. Also additionally he earned his living as a cab driver.
1970 the BUDOKAI changed into the NIHON SOBUDO RENGOKAI (NSR) ("Japanese Society for whole Budo") with the headquater at the HONBU SOBUKAN in Tokyo.
1978 Soke NAKAMURA officially registerd his school under the name "TAKEDA RYU NAKAMURA HA. From that time on the official heritage of the school was assured. Master OBA surely would have been very proud about this step. Soke NAKAMURA still honours his master today and it is always very thrilling and a pleasure to listen to him, while he is telling old stories.
Because of his constancy, his severe discipline he kept an 800 years old tradition alive for us. Therefore a place of honour is granted in the hall of fame of the important masters of martial arts in Japan.
His name, his work will be a guide for all times and for future generations.
